The best guess is that the smaller diameter cylinders reduced the overall width of the loco while still providing the power of two larger cylinders. The G&Q had 200' radius curves and vertical rock cuttings that may have not been wide enough, at least initially. It started out as a 3' gauge railroad and was converted to 42" gauge in 1898.
