In the village of Albiqu is the preserved home of Artist Georgia O’Keefe… open for tours but make reservations in advance… the village is like a proper Spanish Colonial New Mexico village clustered around their parish church… and is organized around the water ditch, or acequia. The individual in charge of the ditch is the Mayordomo… a very trusted and respected elected position. Land around the village is cooperatively owned, preserving so much.
In the village is an antique store (relocated from Taos) a now closed bar, and one resident has an art gallery of his and his families work... everything else is down the hill on the highway
The museum of her art is in Santa Fe. Her husband, Richard Stieglitz, artistic photographer before Ansel Adams knew Adams… as did Georgia… Towards Chama from Albiqu is the Phantom Ranch… where she had lived earlier… These are all landscapes worth exploring.
