What you mean-um "never", Kemo Sabé?
When I first saw (ex-) S.P. #18 in Independence in 1955, D&RG #168 in Colorado Springs in late 1959, and RGS #20 at the CRRM a few months later, I never even dreamed that any of them would ever run again — yet today all three – and #315 / #425 – are operational. Who knew fifty years ago that #4449 in Oaks Park south of Portland or #3985 in Cheyenne or #4014 in Pomona would ever be resuscitated? There are still a few of us die-hards here on the NGDF who hope to see #483 and maybe even #498 running again, and if #610 can come back to life – however briefly – why not a cab-forward 4-8-8-2 or an Allegheny 2-6-6-6?
- Sincerely,
Willie (Wm. Claude Johnson-Barr III, Esq.)

p.s. OTOH, 500 or 1,000 years from now when the cockroaches have taken over after we pitiful humans have destroyed ourselves and taken all the other mammals along with us, IMHO there won't be much left of anything "railroady" other than a few places where the concentration of iron oxide is a bit higher than average
