That's a lot of interesting information that would have taken weeks for me to dig out — assuming that I even could! Most of those subtle differences are not apparent in the photos posted above, nor did I notice them when I stopped by for an afternoon's visit with Jeff several years ago when he was working on #111.

BTW, most likely #40 & #44 (and their sisters) had Stephenson valve gear originally, and were converted to Walschearts when the old slide valves were replaced by the Franklin piston valve "kits". Were superheaters added at the same time? That would be a BIG incentive for the valves being changed!
