To further elaborate, Floyd once said that when they had section gangs and the track was in good shape they sometimes approached 50 mph. If so, that must have been before the mikes arrived. Most of the rail was 45# in those days and I believe the mikes or ten wheeler would go through it before they achieved that speed. I personally would not want to run any narrow gauge train that fast, but life was cheap in those days and some of those guys were pretty nervy.
