ElStumpdodger, one explanation for the difference in times is that these were the leaving times, not arrival. On the trip West, they would have dwell time at the Whitney depot before leaving and possibly 5-10 min. in there for water and fuel loading. On the return trip, there would be no dwell time at Larch, so the return trip east would be the actual running time between these points I think.
