My first visit to Cheyenne was in 1968. We rode the 8444 from Denver to Yoder, which is north of Cheyenne. On the return we got off at Cheyenne and decided to see all the engines in the yard. Remember this was only 9 years after steam ended on the UP. 3985, 4005, one of the 800's, 4023 and maybe another engine were outside in a row. Inside was the 5511, and the steam rotary. It was magical there. My brother 13, and me(17) got kicked out of the yard by a UP police. It was after that the family went to Durango and did the 3-day chase of the D&RGW that I have posted photos of in the past. We also saw 346 running at the CRRM while in Denver. It was over 10 years later that a bunch of UP employees started working on restoring 3985.
