The UP appears to be liquidating its excess steam locomotives (and the centennial) while keeping 838. I take that to mean the UP must feel 838 still has some parts worth stripping should 844 need them. It also implies they're apparently satisfied with the Big Boy's reliability as well as with its ability to run across much of the system without harming the track, rendering the Challenger superfluous.
