We had a succession of several of them when I was a kid. I can remember one, I think it was actually my step-grandparents', that started cutting out until the driver turned the reserve gas valve on. Even as a kid I was amazed that there wasn't a fuel gauge. I also remember a 6 volt battery under the back seat, and the windshield squirter being powered from air off the spare tire.
Even in So California, I don't recall them being too warm. I can't imagine how you stayed warm in the snow and cold of the Rockies. Of course, you were probably dressed pretty warm especially for those photo locations requiring a bit of a hike.
