Regarding the “toy” 15” gauge Bowdish/Klompmaker air pumps. It’s a simple answer. Cost. When given the budget to initially switch to and install an air brake system on the trains a decade ago, we were not able to afford the Westinghouse pumps. The small ones got us air and have served admirably. Now, as we continue to rebuild locomotives and upgrade things, we are moving to the Westinghouse 9-1/2” singles as can be seen on engine 14. 504 has an 8” single which was installed during its time in Minnesota and is still serving well.
Regarding the pony trucks. Yep. They were totally overrated on these engines and on this railroad. First installed in the 1960’s for aesthetics, they were troublesome at best and a maintenance headache. We went so far as to design and install a much more functional version in 2017. They were far superior to the old ones. But the engines continued to tell us they simply did not want them there. The well tank engine frames make them not practical to equalize, which was a main issue with their function. So. We convinced the higher ups that it was time to admit the people that built them knew best and take them back to 0-4-0s as designed. Lo and behold, they ride and behave the same with or without them - minus the headaches and cost.
Regarding lack of posts pertaining to our operation. You’re right, the incentive to post just isn’t there. Far too many negative attitudes from proclaimed “expert” rail fans and even some in the steam industry. Usually younger guys with a “holier than thou” attitude because they work for XYZ Railroad and we are but a toy park train to them.
Now, back to my quiet grease pit….
