1) idetify the BaldwinClass of the engine (any engine you are looking at)
2) Locate the specification sheet (on line at SMU)
3) locate a class list (held by SMU, but not on line, but have been microfilmed)

The class list will list all locomtoives buillt to that Class and drawing...
Locate the specification sheets for the reliated locomotives and compare to find differences
Research each to understand changes made while in service...

It is time consuming but will result in accurate information...
