What folks should know about John is how he went far beyond the call of duty in ensuring that the right-of-way project had the essential equipment it needed. He was involved in the planning since early last winter. No one looked forward to participating in this project more than John.
However, a medical matter that arose last week in his family prevented his spending this week in Chama. Knowing that he was responsible for bringing some equipment critical to the project along with the work he needed to do on a speeder trailor, he loaded his truck and drove all the way from California just for the weekend.
While the rest of us were enjoying the commraderie of a pre-work session dinner at the High Country on Sunday evening, John slipped out early to haul some compressors over the pass to Antonito and back, dodging scores of elk and mule deer on Hwy 17. He completed the work on the speeder trailer late Monday morning before hitting the road to return to California.
I've spent my career managing nonprofits, but never have I witnessed the level of commitment to mission that I have with the likes of John Cole and many other members of the Friends. Guys like him get it done.
