Back in 1975-76 when the AFT was touring the country we
often usually had to do our month inspections and boiler washes at locations where a pit was not available. Getting the belly plug out was a real problem, as most of the engine crew were pretty sturdy guys who had a tough time squeezing between the wheels to get to the plug, but one of my fellow volunteers, Merle Rawlins, was a wiry little guy who was small enough to get in there and strong enough to do the job when he got there. ngdiscussion.net], several times Doyle paid Merle's round-trip airfare so he could join the team for two or three days when possible.
