The logo applied to #483 on 09/01/70 was done by Ernie Robart using a home-made stencil that he created in consultation with Terry Ross and other early-day volunteers.

Or, more gramma-tickle-y correct, 'twas I who has posted that photo of Ernie Robart — more than once, as I recall.  IIRC, Ernie sent me the original slide several years ago; it was taken with his camera but obviously by someone else – possibly Ed Stabler, who told me it was taken from the tailgate of his pickup – on the evening of September 1, 1970, shortly after the D&RGW delivered to Antonito the first shipment of their equipment that was sold to the C&TS.  I did a scan of the original slide using the maximum 4,000 dpi setting available, and have saved the original as a 6720×4800 tif file.  Ernie gave me permission at that time to use his photos in any way that might benefit the C&TS, so if you have need of a hi-res copy for a legitimate purpose I can provide such.

The scene was re-created – sort of – in late August, 2010, during the celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the C&TS:


IIRC, Ernie told me that the vinyl copy of the logo and the lettering done at that time were VERY close to his originals, the stencils for which he thought were still in his garage but he could not find them for us to use at the 40th B.D. party.  Here's a lo-res copy of the file that I sent to Design-a-Sign in Pagosa Springs for their production of the 2010 press-on vinyl version of Ernie's 1970 stenciled logo that was used on faux #483 (actually #487 in Hollywierd make-up):


IIRC, after Ernie passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in late December 2018 his wife Lourdes donated all of his photo archives (9,000+ color slides and several times that number of b&w negatives) to The Friends of the C&TS.  I do not know how much progress has been made in scanning his collection and making it available online.  Meanwhile, for a FEW more of Ernie's photos of the very early days of the C&TS, see [ngdiscussion.net] and [ngdiscussion.net].
