I remember those days and that configuration at the depot. 1978 was that last year that I worked up there regularly as I was hired by UP in September of 1978 (and they counted my 3' gauge experience when they hired me).
Most people are not aware that the station sign on the end of the depot in that photo is original to the depot.
It was found when they were moving the depot to set it on its foundation, it was nailed to the underside of the depot.
The Black "Silver Plume" sign above the entrance door and the train arrival and departure board were made by me. I hand lettered that sign using an old photo as a model. I have seen a photo of the same arrival/departure board on the Idaho Springs depot as well.
Someone told me that they made a stencil using that board for another reproduction....
Not bad for a hand lettering job.
