Water cars had many uses over the years such as filling cisterns at section houses and for water tanks w/o other sources. They were indeed used as aux. tenders on certain trains and in certain eras. The Alamosa Branch was one of those lines. More before often used before the larger engines/tender tanks became common still used after that at times as the water sources between Alamosa & Round Hill were somewhat limited in flow rates. One of the idler cars used on the branch, after the 3rd rail was extended to Hooper in '30, was an old tender and was also used as a water car. Engines had to have the right piping though.
