D&RGW traffic over Marshall Pass was seasonal. I think most of us would not think of coal traffic as seasonal, but as it was used heavily for home and business heating, the demand for coal for heating dropped off in the summer months. The D&RGW often pulled the helper crews out of Sargents during the summer and put them back in the fall when the stock rush began and coal shipments picked up. The D&RGW had a switch engine at Crested Butte until 1933 and often pulled it off when traffic was down. The CF&I controlled a major part of the traffic in coal for the steel mill in Pueblo, if steel production dropped, so did the coal traffic.

The bottom fell out of business on the railroad here this week. One hill train crew cut off and sent to Salida, also engine crews cut from 9 to 4, and from 6 engine to 4 for hill crews.

Another hill crew was put on here Thursday to assist in moving business over Marshall Pass, which continues to be very heavy. From 60 to 80 loads are in the yard everyday.

Trains in Sargent are not much of a novelty nowadays, since railroad business has assumed bigger proportions than for some time past. Thru trains and "turn-around" are quite frequent, but the return of the hill force crew seems only speculative as yet.

ROUNDHOUSE AT SARGENT To BE REOPENED OCTOBER 1
The roundhouse at Sargent which has been closed for a long time will be re-opened October 1st to provide for the increase in business on the narrow gauge lines. The switch engine at Crested Butte, which also has been out of service for several months, will be in service for several months, will be in service after October 1. It is expected that all the crews on the narrow gauge lines will be back at work by Monday.
