For my 2 cents, I'd have to say, both and neither. I like the smoke and valve gear effects of #2, but overall prefer the engine in #1. Also, #1 downloaded slower than the Gote at least for me.
In general though, I think Mike has a good point, a little animation goes a LOOoonnngggg way. These days there's so much flashy "shoot the monkey and win a prize" crud on the internet that I kind of tune out any animations that I don't specifically ask for.
But that's just me, and professional marketing type people sure seem to be stuck on animation to get people's attention so there must be something valuable in it.
