I'll echo what Earl said. One of the things Joe could tell you at any point in the season was the current rider count on that very day from his memory. I also remember an instance during a Friends Board meeting where he spoke up against a comment that was made about a situation in Chama, that showed me how close the community was, and had to be, to survive.
