I’ve pondered that as well. There’s sixty years of tree growth meaning some sections will require a major logging operation. And those trees have roots, plus six decades of leaf litter fouling the ballast. All the ties are essentially gone (did the railway even use creosoted ties?), but I gather most of the rail will be useable. There’s a similar abandoned line in our area, equally long abandoned, and even salvaging the rail will be a major undertaking. It will be interesting to see how the EBT handles it, and exciting to think it’s being considered.
