Together, the East Troublesome and Cameron Peak fires have now burned over 400,000 acres of Northern Colorado. This is mind-boggling considering that prior to this year, the largest fire in the state's history was around 138,000 acres (2002's Hayman fire). My heart goes out to all who've had to evacuate, lost homes or have dealt with the stress of not-knowing. We have numerous friends and acquaintances who have been directly impacted. For us to the east of the fires, the worst direct impact has been the near-constant smoke and ash-fall. Nothing compared to those who've lost so much.
Today's snowstorm is almost a direct bullseye on the fires, with snow amounts of a foot or so expected in the fire areas. This will undoubtedly help, but it will take sustained moisture, cooler temps and LESS WIND for this fire season to finally be over.
My heart goes out to all who've been impacted. Northern Colorado will never be the same.
