The name change in 1921 came about due to a reorganization after the Rio Grande failed on its obligation to pay a guaranteed Western Pacific bond interest. The Guarantee was put in place during George Gould's control of the Rio Grande and the construction of the WP.
Then in 1935 the D&RGW went into receivership. That ended in 1947 with approval of a reorganization.
The full story of the above has many twists and turns and can be found in books like Robert LeMassena's
Rio Grande . . . to the Pacific!
