The diamond stack that 168 had when donated to Colorado Springs in 1938 was the diamond stack that was put on it for its movie work filming “The Texas Rangers” on the Santa Fe Branch in 1936. Incidentally, this was also the last time it ran on the D&RGW. Otherwise, it always ran with a straight stack— at least from 1900 on.

Incidentally, your first photo is 169 rather than 168. 169 also had a straight stack for its entire 20th century operational life. And when prepared for display at the 1939 New York Worlds Fair and then Alamosa, it too was given a diamond stack. I guess someone at the D&RGW thought it looked better with a diamond stack.
