According to our president Karl Schaeffer (one of the two people funding and owning the 36), it is about 80% complete and work is progressing steadily, although more slowly than normal due to the pandemic. The project was delayed about 1 year by the aftermath of the fire a year and a half ago caused by an out of control auto striking the building and the resultant fire that cost the life of the driver. Nothing was damaged directly by the fire, but water, foam and smoke damage inside the building caused quite a bit, requiring the builder to replace some of his equipment, the entire finished cab had to be disassembled, sanded and refinished, and much of the completed metalwork experienced surface rust from the firefighting fluids - this light surface rust had to be completely removed from everything. No predictions of completion date (we all know that a prediction in this field is almost always wrong due to forces beyond our control), but we are all hoping for sometime in 2021. Karl and Chris (the other funder/owner) have a policy of no published photos until it's done, but folks attending the September 26th evening lecture will see many pictures of the process so far. The 36 is Karl and Chris's private project, not a museum project, but it will be permanently located here at the museum.
