It might appear that slide valves are supported at both ends but this is not the case. The valve spindle is supported at both ends but as the valve itself is a loose fit within a cage (can't remember the correct terminology...) - if you don't believe me listen to a locomotive with vertical slide valves start from rest - there is a definate "clunk" as the valves are pushed up to the faces.....
