Way cool, thanks. It also answers the question about the extended valve rod through the steam chest. I always figured it was to support both ends of the valve, just didn't know for sure. Actually, given that slide valves "wear in" it seems that supporting both ends of the valve would not be the best idea since it would reduce te ability of the valve to seat properly on the area it "wore in".
