In October 1953 my grade school class had a multi-day excursion to the Rhine River. On October 10 our teacher's son - who was helping his mom, Mrs. Remy, as an escort- took this photo of a steam powered, coal burning side-wheel tug towing a string of barges. An amazing sight.
The other memorable encounter on that shoreline walk was meeting a friendly black US soldier coming the other way- the first black person I and most of my class mates had ever seen.
