IIRC, technically 'The Palisades' refers to the almost vertical rock face ABOVE the roadbed of the DSP&P, and NOT to the roadbed itself.
'The Palisades' was named long before even the wagon road over Alpine Pass was established.
From page 223 of 'Denver, South Park & Pacific' by Mac Poor:
"Steady progress was made and soon the ringing sound of the spike maul was echoing against the face of that mighty wall of granite, the Palisades."
