The old road, built on top of the narrow gauge r.o.w., was still the main highway my first time over La Veta, Casey -
In a TrailWays bus en route to Alamosa to ride my first three-day excursion to Silverton and back.* The bus stopped just after sunrise at the café in the old hotel at the top of the pass long enough for us to have breakfast. BTW, that first severe left turn on the climb west from La Veta is much sharper than a horseshoe – IIRC, it was widely known as 'The Muleshoe Curve'.
