Not to be pedantic, but I suspect you are referring to "feral" apple trees. I have come to find them rather fascinating, occasionally finding one out in the woods. A pure indicator of previous human presence, as there are no "wild" endemic species of
Malus in the Western US that produce fruit that you would want to eat or cook with. As such, they are certainly a cultivar of the orchard apple we all know and love:
Malus domestica.
All that said, I think we can agree that they are a treat to find and eat.
