Lot's of not so nice things can show up in a coal deposit... mercury, sulphur, lead etc. Usually in small concentrations that can usually be safely ignored, unless you're having BNSF or UP deliver it directly to your site.

I'd guessing that a front end loader operator at the coal yard put the bucket down a bit too soon and scraped up a few inches of dirt along with the coal.
