Here are a few photos of the CM ROW, through the windshield eastbound on Hagerman Pass, September 26 2019.

Noting that century-old ROW cinders are surprisingly resilient, my impression is that Dave's photo-study and Hank's description are spot-on: the current ROW is mainly the prevailing local dirt/rock with occasional patches/traces of cinders.

Dave, the N scale Midland is really neat, and will look great with a more realistic track plan!
