Touring the Clifton-Morenci district

March 16, 2004 12:06PM
Dave , I use the old term "district" as I hate the withspread use of the amorphous word "area" ! Alistair Cooke , the great BBC correspondent , also voiced his dislike of that four-letter word . Just my quirk .
While around the CLifton-Morenci district , check out Clifton carefully . It is Arizona's most recent ghost towns ,with the old business district almost completely abandoned , and still intact ! Just south of the biz district ,is the beautiful old A&NM /Coronado RR/SP depot . N.G. commuter trains ran daily to this depot from old Morenci till 1932 . Across the highway is a 20" gauge Porter 0-4-4 .Old Morenci is gone ,as the big pit expanded , but at new Morenci you can see the busy mill being switched from Hwy 666 (the road may now be US 491). One of the other Porters is at New Morenci , I think . Please tell us where .Ditto for ther other 20" gauge steamer supposedly at Safford . West of Clifton are some spectacular remains of the the famous loops and switchbacks of the n.g. Morenci Southern . There is a steeel viaduct out there . Do you have Dave Myrick's "Railroads of Arizona , Volume III" ? If not you will need it as it will help you can probably figure out where a lot of this stuff was . Another 20" Porter is on display in a museum at Phoenix .
