Dry grass over the right-a-way between the rails all over the Rio Grande system back in the day...Wetter climate and less people around to notice these fires that mostly burned out on their own...I remember riding on the CATS in 1973 behind a double header out of Chama...Mile or so north of Cresco the train started a fire...The train backed down to the fire and a dozen or so people got off to do what they could but the fire took off up the hillside toward Hwy 17...Thank goodness the fire held at the highway and didn't jump over it...This could have been a very large fire for a very young CATS RR.
