I think there was a massive fire in the Osier region around 1879. Numerous fallen trees used to be visible on the mesa to the west of Osier from this fire. Until the advent of "Smokey Bear" policies, fires were allowed to burn out unless they threatened a settlement. For a detailed look at the change in Forest Service thinking to fighting all fires read "1910: Year of the Fires" by Stephen Pyne.
