Thanks for the info and links, guys. Every day is a schoolday.
I'd never noticed the double-square face of the signal before. They still don't seem that visible, compared to modern see-me-from-a-mile-away colour lights, but I guess if the driver is looking for it, and you're flat out at 40 anyway, with a speed restriction in yard/station areas, it would work just fine.
