Thank you Fritz. I had always just assumed that it was because of the water quality in Silverton... in the Animas, Cement and Mineral Creeks. High acidity is completely natural for the area as water and iron interact, and only heightened with the mining. I'm sure finding a solution to this would have been challenging at the time, and a fast and easy solution was to take on water just a few short miles out of town.
