Mike:
Most interesting information! Amazing to see how particular individuals--engineers in this case--influence what we see in photos.
Bye the way, 476 is the number on the locomotive on the seal for the City of Durango!
When I speak of shyness, I also mean the 1941-1951 period on the San Juan. Given that many of the photos during this period are by Otto Perry, and he took them during postal holidays, perhaps this accounts in part for why 478 is not seen?
I understood from one of Lathrop's tales that locomotives were pooled after 1905 or so. Did other engineers favor other engines among the '27's, '36's and '37's, or did they get what was hot and full of fuel?
Also, I wonder during an earlier era--say in Salida before 1923, how did the trainmaster determine what locomotive(s) to assign to a particular train? K-27+C-19 or T-12+C-19, etc.,?
Thanks,
Keith
