There can't be any denying that 473 has had the toughest luck not only of the three surviving K-28's, but probably of any engine active today.

I was in Durango the night Andy Payne limped into Durango with 473 and the entire 2nd Silverton train on one cylinder. One of the piston valve heads had blown out through the stack, leaving a perfectly round hole in the screen on top. He'd been pulling upgrade on the highline when it happened. He managed to pull the train to Rockwood in two sections, then pulled the whole 11 car train all the way to Durango. They got in late, but they made it. This legendary tale is still told by the crews. Tough engine, damn good engineer, great story.
