The Calumet & Hecla Mining Company locomotives probably had similar issues with carbon buildup in the cylinders. Although their Mason 0-6-4T "Torch Lake" appears to have had its snifter valves in the correct orientation when it was pulled out of storage and shipped south to Greenfield Village in 1969, I've found numerous photos of their other locomotives in service with the snifters flipped upside down. The one below shows one of the later Mason Bogies "Schoolcraft" although I've also seen photos of their Baldwin tank engines with a similar "adjustment."
