The roundhouse portion is still in use. The machine shop portion's roof collapsed more than a few years ago. The Kahului RR was converted to Kahului Trucking & Storage back in the 1960's when the RR was abandoned. KT&S main purpose was to haul molasses and raw sugar from the mills to the bulk sugar warehouses for outbound shipment to the C&H refinery in Crockett, CA. The HC&S Puunene mill was closed in Dec. 2016.

On Dec. 17, 2016, the Puunene Mill smokestacks stopped puffing as HC&S closed its doors after 145 years in business. The closure of the 36,000-acre plantation meant the loss of 650 jobs and the end of an industry that shaped Hawaii for more than a century and a half.
It was the last operating mill in the State. Thus, no need for KT&S.

We rebuilt KRR #1 Claus Spreckles in the Kahului Shops from 1985-87.
