The story that was passed around was the highway dept informed the D&RGW that the new highway alignment was not exactly compatible with the existing railroad. The D&RGW said "we don't care, its about to be torn up".

Some the contractor's workers eventually assisted in some of the track repair. There was still problems with the new highway dropping rocks on the railroad until retaining walls were built in the early/mid 1970's.
