Last week I had the opportunity to visit both the Antonito and Chama Shops. I am happy to report that things are well orgaized, a great deal of work is being done, hours have been increased to 5 10's, and there is a positive atmosphere. Work on the 484 is progressing well and all flues and tubes were placed in the end sheets for installation. It won't be long before parts start to go back on. The 488 is also progressing well and there is optimism that she will be ready by opening day or soon after. The shop layout has been improved, safety is a concern, and everyone was working hard. The Antonito Shop is also a very busy place. The 487 has had some sections of its firebox inside walls removed as well as a piece of the crown sheet. Good inspections found the problems and they should be taken care of in short order. The 463 is resting inside the north shop. Tender truck and car restoration work was being done in the south shop. I am not an expert in locomotive repairs but feel that what I saw was a great improvement over recent seasons and the 484 and 487 will be ready to roll prior to opening day.
