All I have to offer is info over the vine from a friend who works in the Chama shops— I’ve asked a similar question before, his response was that most, if not all of the K-37’s on C&TS property, (apart from 497 of course), have condemned boilers. Totally shot from an operational standpoint, If not fully worthless, they so thin and worn that they would never fly under FRA regulations, so I have been told. Atop that, he articulated that the C&TS had looked into estimates for new boiler construction for the K-37’s and 483 in the past— the estimate then was anywhere between 600,000-1mil a boiler. (iirc, it’s been a few months since the aforementioned discussion.)
I take that with a grain of salt, (not that I don’t trust his word, it’s likely founded in some reason), but I would not be surprised if a few of the boilers are condemned. Perhaps someone closer to the matter could weigh in on the reality and provide some ‘more credible’ facts if this info is off the mark?
