Well, that depends on the era you are talking about. At one point the railroad extended all the way to Boone NC.

However, the line progressively retracted back to Elizabethton TN, and then eventually quit all together. The line from Johnson City TN to Elizabethton was dual gauge at some point AFAIK, but when the NG quit (beyond Elizabethton), the remainder was just standard gauge.
