I read with much interest a post by one of our old dogs around here who quoted an original D&RG fireman. He said the 480's held 10 tons of black. They fueled / watered and left Antonito with a large consist, making 25 mph across the flats. Speed dropped to 10 in the steeps. They left Antonito at dusk, and arrived in Chama at dawn as he kicked the last bits of coal and dust into the firebox. Now ignore the railroad and the mountain. Just shoveling 10 tons of coal from dusk to dawn sounds like a job enough! No wonder firemen were "respected" in the local watering holes!
BTW - this post followed a question about fueling at Antonito, brought on by John west posting his series of pix to the web.
