Underneath the visible wood siding and roof (on each side of the bridge) is a wood pony truss. The trusses are 'boxed in' to protect them from the weather.

The original bridge was erected when steam locomotives were the prevailing form of power. Blasting the underside of a "complete" covered bridge roof with steam locomotive exhaust could lead to a serious fire problem.
