Earl,
The Grefco mine/plant here in Socorro, NM is still going strong. Have a friend who works there. They hired a few extra people in 2008 to increase productivity. The strike was only the Antonito plant I believe. I see a BNSF train pulling out 20 or so cars of perlite now and then. I don't live in Socorro proper, so don't know how often, but hear it's several times a week. Will have to a snap a photo next time I see the perlite train. No turns, so they always back the cars into the mine slowly, about 3 miles along the spur through town, blocking US-60 west of town for several minutes! Thanks for the descriptions at Alamosa (my home town) and La Veta pass. Sure wish I paid more attention seeing those NG and SG trains pulling into Alamosa in the 1960s. Always enjoy your very informative posts.
