Re: RGS #27 still in Cuba?

Steven,
I see it is the same class as the boiler I inquired about at Tefts Spur.
I have gone through the trip reports posted on the web and in Contintental Railway Journals for the past few years. In short, there are a few survivors from around 1880; and some of those that remain are operational.
The oldest is "La Junta", a Norris 4-2-0 built in 1843 on display in the Central Station Lobby in Havana.
The next oldest (and the oldest operating) locomotive in Cuba is 0-4-2T #1112, last reported at 211 Ruben Martinez Villena Sugar Mill. It was built by Baldwin in 1878.
Next are two 0-6-0's, 1180 and 1181, built by Baldwin in 1882. 1181 has been preserved, while 1180, named "La Mambista", is operational at 635 Rafael Freyre Sugar Mill.
There is also an 0-4-2ST Baldwin numbered 1107 on display at 206 Manuel Isla Perez Sugar Mill. It too was built in 1882.
Another 0-6-0 built by Baldwin in 1883 is located at Banes Wagon Works, along with 1181. Yet another 0-6-0 built by Baldwin in 1884 is on display next to a refreshment stand on the Autopista between Habana and Sta. Clara.
The list goes on. Of the above, only the 0-6-0s are narrow guage, and built to the unusual gauge of 2ft 6in. So none of them sound like RGS #27.
There is a 3-ft gauge Baldwin numbered 1254 and dumped at 640 Frank Pais Sugar Mill for which I do not have a year built. Several other derelict standard-guage 2-8-0s with no construction information have also been reported derelict around the island. Unfortunately, many of these hulks that have gone un-noticed for years are being cut up in recent years. Nearly all of the above were reported from 1996 to 2000.
There are sheds at several mills that have not been visited either because all of their steam locomotives are derelict or stored, or because the staff is hostile to gricers. So it is still possible that it exists somewhere on the island.
Your best contact for Cuban steam is Wayne Weiss; long regarded as an expert on Cuban Steam who is the American distributor for the Cuban CD-ROM. His e-mail address is RoundBell@aol.com; his snail mail address is Bellaire Roundhouse, 5314 Bellaire Blvd, Bellaire, TX; 77401.
