Sharrod,

from my post 26th December, 2012 318 in steam

Culled from the IRON HORSE NEWS of the CRRM.

Issue #118 September 1982
"We rejected the new crownsheet made for engine 318 as holes drilled in wrong places, and we would not agree to filling them in and redrilling. We are now seeking a new supplier. Regrettably 318 is now back where it is last October."

Issue #123 September 1983
"Work did resume on the engine 318 in late August, boilermakers working on layout of new crownsheet. The cab has been removed and will serve as pattern for a new one."

Issue #124 December 1983
"A goal is to have the engine #318, the former Florence & Cripple Creek 2-8-0 again operational by the time of the National Narrow Gauge Convention in Sept.
Boiler works delivered in Octobera new crownsheet for #318 and the next step is to fit it. About 500 new staybolts will have to be made and placed. A new cab is being built as well."

Issue #125 March 1984
"The volunteers insist that 2-8-0 #318 will also make steam by September and we mention this to keep peace in the matter Meanwhile our staff continue to deny to worried visitors that it is in process of being scrapped, its "...just dismantled."
Boilermakers returned to the engine #318 this month and put in the new crownsheet, their first appearence since before the November snows."

Issue #126 May 1984
"..our volunteers insist Engine 318 will be ready in Sept.
Even a little work on Engine 318 was accomplished, and..."

Issue #143 August 1987
"Boilermakers and volunteers continued steadily on 2-8-0 #318 and the former now have less than 100 staybolts to prepare. That dream of a doubleheader by our volunteers now is coming close to reality."

Issue #148 September 1988
"Welding done earlier on Engine#318 failed to pass an x-ray, and that firm no longer in the area, inspectors deemed it must be removed and another certified company is doing the re-welding. Volunteers working on replacing the staybolts now have it down to 120 yet to be installed."

Issue #150 February 1989
"Engine 318 now has less than 80 staybolts to put in place. Drive boxes need machining yet, but that hinges on some other work."

Issue #167 May 1992
"The driving wheels of D&RGW locomotive 318 were trucked to Durango on May 9, to have the tires turned at Durango & Silverton's shop. Volunteers Lewis Dahm, Mike Horner ans Steve Swanson did a fine job with this move and while there measured display locomotive 315 to obtain data for reassembling 318."
